About The Book

al-Mutawwal Sharh Talkhis al-Miftah is Imam Sad al-Din al-Taftazani's longer commentary on al-Qazwini's Talkhis — the supreme reference of post-classical Arabic rhetoric. Where his shorter Mukhtasar suits the intermediate student, the three-volume Mutawwal is the work for advanced study: every topic in maani, bayan, and badi is unfolded in full, every position is engaged at length, every interpretation is settled. The work has been the standard advanced text of Arabic rhetoric across the post-classical Sunni world for more than six centuries.

About The Author

Imam Sad al-Din Masud b. Umar al-Taftazani (722-792 AH / 1322-1390 CE) was a Persian polymath whose works became the standard textbooks of scholastic philosophy, logic, theology, and rhetoric across the post-classical Sunni world.

About the author

Sad al-Din al-Taftazani: Imam Sa'd al-Din Masud ibn Umar al-Taftazani (722-792 AH / 1322-1390 CE), rahimahullah, was a Persian polymath born in Taftazan (Khorasan). Among the most prolific and influential scholars of the post-classical Sunni tradition, he excelled in kalam, logic, rhetoric, grammar, and usul. In his later years he served at the court of the Timurid ruler Tamerlane (Timur). His Sharh al-Aqaid al-Nasafiyya (commentary on al-Nasafi's creed) became the standard introductory kalam text in Sunni seminaries. His Sharh al-Maqasid remains a landmark in rational theology. In Arabic rhetoric, he produced two commentaries on the Talkhis al-Miftah of al-Qazwini: al-Mukhtasar (the shorter) and al-Mutawwal (the extended commentary), both of which anchored the post-classical curriculum of balagha alongside his Sharh Tasrif al-Izzi in morphology. He also wrote Sharh Miftah al-Ulum, extending the chain of commentary on al-Sakkaki's foundational rhetoric text.

About the editor

Ajaj Awda Barghash: Ajaj Awda Barghash is a contemporary Arab researcher and textual editor (muhaqqiq) whose scholarly work centers on the classical tradition of Arabic rhetoric (balagha). He is the critical editor of three landmark texts in the Taftazani school of balagha: al-Mukhtasar Sharh Talkhis al-Miftah (Dar al-Taqwa, 1442 AH/2021, 911 pages), al-Mutawwal Sharh Talkhis al-Miftah in three volumes, and Sharh Miftah al-Ulum in three volumes - all of which are commentaries anchored in Imam Sa'd al-Din al-Taftazani's tradition of expounding al-Sakkaki's foundational rhetorical text, Miftah al-Ulum. Beyond rhetoric, Barghash has published research with Dar al-Muqtabas on Imam Abu al-Su'ud's methodology in Qur'anic exegesis. He maintains an academic presence and is active in contemporary Arabic Islamic scholarship.
