Sharh al-Bayquniyya is Imam al-Zurqani's commentary on al-Bayquniyya — the celebrated foundational matn of hadith terminology composed by Shaykh Umar b. Muhammad al-Bayquni (d. 1080 AH) in 34 lines of rajaz. The matn enumerates the principal categories of hadith — sahih, hasan, daif, marfu, mawquf, maqtu, musnad, mursal, munqati, mudallas, shadhdh, munkar, and the rest — defining each in a single verse. The commentary unfolds each definition for the beginning student, illustrates it with examples, and clarifies the relations among categories.

For more than three centuries the Bayquniyya has been the universal first text in mustalah al-hadith for beginning students, and al-Zurqani's commentary is among the most-used companions for it.

About The Author

Imam Muhammad b. Abd al-Baqi al-Zurqani (1055-1122 AH / 1645-1710 CE) was an Egyptian Maliki scholar and master of hadith. Beyond this commentary, his celebrated Sharh al-Mawahib al-Laduniyya — a sustained commentary on al-Qastallani's sira — runs to twelve large volumes and is one of the major commentary works of late Sunni hadith literature.

عن المؤلف

الإمام محمد بن عبد الباقي الزرقاني (١٠٥٥-١١٢٢ هـ) عالمٌ مالكيٌّ مصريٌّ ومُحَدِّث. له بالإضافة إلى هذا الشرح "شرح المواهب اللدنية" على سيرة القسطلاني في اثني عشر مجلداً، من أمّهات شروح السيرة المتأخّرة.

Muhammad ibn Abd al-Baqi al-Zurqani: Imam Muhammad ibn Abd al-Baqi al-Zurqani al-Maliki rahimahullah (1055-1122 AH / 1645-1710 CE) was an Egyptian Maliki scholar and leading authority in hadith in the late eleventh and early twelfth century AH. He is among the most prominent hadith scholars of the Ottoman-era Egyptian scholarly tradition. His magnum opus is Sharh al-Mawahib al-Laduniyya ala al-Mawahib al-Laduniyya, a twelve-volume commentary on the celebrated prophetic biography by Imam Ahmad al-Qastallani, which stands as one of the most substantial commentary works produced in the later Sunni hadith tradition. He also wrote Sharh al-Bayquniyya, a commentary on the thirty-four-verse rajaz poem of Shaykh Umar al-Bayquni (d. 1080 AH), which catalogs the types of hadith in a single verse each. Al-Zurqani's commentary works through every category - sahih, hasan, daif, marfu, mawquf, maqtu, musnad, mursal, munqati, mudallis, shadh, munkar, and others - defining each and clarifying the relationships between them for students beginning the study of hadith terminology.
