About The Book

Sharh al-Hamziyya is Imam Ibn Abd al-Haqq al-Sunbati's classical commentary on al-Hamziyya — the great 457-line ode in praise of the Prophet (peace be upon him) composed by Imam Sharaf al-Din al-Busiri. The commentary works through the ode line by line, identifying the scriptural and historical references that anchor each verse, drawing out the literary devices, and supplying the doctrinal background that brings the poem alive for the serious reader.

Alongside the commentaries of Ibn Hajar al-Haytami and Shaykh al-Bajuri, al-Sunbati's commentary is one of the standard companions for serious study and recitation of the Hamziyya.

About the author

Ibn Abd al-Haqq al-Sunbati: Shihab al-Din Ahmad ibn Ahmad ibn Abd al-Haqq al-Sunbati rahimahullah was a distinguished Shafi'i scholar of tenth-century AH Egypt, tracing his origin to Sunbat, a town in the Daqahliyya governorate. Described by later biographers as a scholar of exceptional versatility, he excelled in Islamic jurisprudence, usul al-fiqh, theology, the Arabic literary sciences, and the art of Qur'anic recitation. He is credited with composing Rawdat al-Fuhum bi-Nazm Niqayat al-Ulum, a poem that organized eighteen distinct Islamic sciences in verse form, accompanied by his own two-volume commentary titled Fath al-Hayy al-Qayyum. Among his other works are a commentary on the Hamziyya ode of Imam al-Busiri, marginal annotations on al-Juwayni's foundational text al-Waraqat in Islamic legal theory, and a treatise on the use of the astrolabe. He was encountered by students in Egypt in 986 AH and transmitted comprehensive teaching authorizations to several disciples, including Abd al-Qadir al-Fayumi, Muhammad Hijazi al-Qalqashandi, and Ahmad ibn Muhammad al-Makkani. He held an important position in the chains of transmission for Qur'anic recitation in Egypt and studied under scholars including Yusuf ibn Zakariya al-Ansari. He died around 999 AH.
