A. J. Arberry: Arthur John Arberry (1905-1969) was among the foremost British Orientalists of the twentieth century. He held the Sir Thomas Adams's Professorship of Arabic at the University of Cambridge and previously taught at the School of Oriental and African Studies (SOAS), University of London. His translation of the Qur'an, 'The Qur'an Interpreted' (George Allen and Unwin, 1955), became a landmark English rendering, praised for its literary sensitivity to the rhythms of the Arabic. Beyond Qur'anic translation, Arberry produced substantial scholarship on Sufism, including 'Sufism: An Account of the Mystics of Islam' (1950), and was a leading translator of classical Persian poetry. He studied under Edward Granville Browne and served in Cairo during World War II, shaping his deep engagement with Arabic and Persian literary traditions.
